Are my images uploaded to a server?

Accepted Answer

No. Color extraction, quantization, grading and export all happen locally in your browser — files are never uploaded to any server, secure and fast.

How is the palette extracted?

The tool uses the Median Cut algorithm to cluster image pixels, sampling by step and skipping transparent pixels for performance, then outputs each dominant color and its pixel ratio; you can extract 2–16 colors.

How do grading and color reduction work together?

Accepted Answer

They are one pipeline: overall grading (exposure, contrast, and so on) runs first, then you can optionally quantize to at most N colors — or leave colors unlimited and export the graded image. Dithering helps keep gradients after reduction; you can also apply the extracted swatches to the graded image.

Can the palette be used in Aseprite or Photoshop?

Yes. Besides a palette PNG, GIMP .gpl, JSON and CSS variables, you can export JASC .pal (Aseprite, GrafX2 and other pixel-art tools) and Adobe .ase (Photoshop, Illustrator and Aseprite). You can also import those same formats to remap the current image onto a project palette.

How do I edit colors or import an existing palette?

Click a swatch to change it with the color picker or HEX — edited colors lock automatically so re-extract keeps them. Pick extra colors from the preview or the screen eyedropper. Importing GIMP .gpl, JASC .pal, Adobe .ase or JSON applies the palette under “Use the extracted palette above”. You can also one-click Retro 16 (PICO-8), Game Boy greens, or the NES master palette.

Is the preview quality the same as the final export?

For smooth real-time performance the preview renders on a downsampled base; when you download, the same “grade → quantize” pipeline runs on the full-resolution image in a background thread (with progress and cancel), so the exported image keeps the original clarity.

Question 7

How do indexed PNG and transparency work?

Accepted Answer

“Indexed PNG” writes a true indexed file with a PLTE chunk (and tRNS when needed). Transparency uses palette index 0, ready for Aseprite; reduce to 256 colors or fewer first if needed. PNG/WebP keep alpha by default; JPG has no alpha, so you pick a matte. Unchecking “Keep transparency” flattens any format onto that matte before export.
